Case Study 01

TuneIn VP Design.

Our mission: Reinventing Radio for a Connected World.

It would take a diverse set of designers, writers, photographers, developers, and content creators to deliver. Reporting to the CEO, and with oversight from Sequoia Capital, General Catalyst, and IVP, I led the Design discipline for the leader in live streaming audio as we reached 75MM actively listening users.

  • We built a world-class Design team from scratch.

With a steady pace, I began designing the organization, then we recruited top talent, followed by designing a new corporate identity, brand voice and tone, establishing research, product vision prototyping, and finally the sonic identity. It took experts from every discipline.

Each of our creative professionals earned industry praise. Our in-house video and photography crew was sought after to document every partner brand activation. Our product designers and UI animators were pulled into exclusive development collaborations with top platforms. The TuneIn app was Apple’s “Editor’s Choice” and “App of the Day” repeatedly. The hard work of our beautiful partnerships remain:

    “Hey Siri, play KCSM…”

”Now playing KCSM provided by TuneIn.”

Hey Siri…

A first of its kind integration of TuneIn LIVE radio with iOS.

A dream team in LA, dreaming up new things.

A rebrand.

We knew early on that we wanted a new TuneIn logo. What we really needed was a full corporate identity system, brand voice & tone. We began with writing.

I trust in collaboration.

We embedded outside identity experts Jason Hardy and Steven Knodel of Century, and with brand strategist and creative writer Tunde Whitten. We invited everyone inside TuneIn to contribute to the logo ideation phase.

“TuneIn” would be heard more than it would be seen. We needed a sonic identity that mapped to the graphic one. Click to play, and volume up:

Reinventing Radio meant creating and supporting a world-class content capture and production team. TuneIn has some of the best Photographers and Filmakers in the game.

With over 75 million monthly active users, TuneIn has more than 60 original stations to span all genres. Each of these need branding – an identity, a theme, imaging (audio), a content calendar, and so much more. This is The Element – a Hip Hop station curated by the best.

Designing the new TuneIn HQ was a joy. From the design critique hallway with custom magnetic whiteboards made with Eric Pfieffer, to the executive roundtable made with OHIO, the space was designed for firm, but fair collaboration.
